2004 Riding Map
Near as I can recall, this was the last year before the divorce; I was trying to stay local and do family things to save what was left of the marriage. (didn't work). Two trips to Cassoday First Sunday breakfast, a weekend in Arkansas with +Nathan Morton and crew. Interesting trip.

2003 Riding Map
2003: New bike; bought a 1997 Honda ST1100 for 2-up touring and more Ironbutt class riding. Did a ton of IBA class stuff on that, ran 50,000 miles in 5 years before I wadded it. But in 2003, I was just learning this huge heavy thing. More local loop riding in Kansas and NW Arkansas. Trip to see a Post in a Field (6th Principle Meridian) with +Jeff Schneider.

When is the flu not the flu?
CTV.ca | If you're vomiting, it's not flu, say experts: "When is the flu not the flu? When you are vomiting.
That's right. If you are nauseated, throwing up or chained to your bathroom with a bad case of the trots, you do not have the flu. (Young children are an exception to the rule, but more on that later.)
You may have food poisoning. You may have Norwalk virus or one of any number of other nasty gastrointestinal bugs. But you don't have the flu. And you don't even have 'a stomach flu' -- a nonsense phrase that makes infectious disease specialists see red."

2002 Riding Map
2002 - my first big year of riding. Forgot about 2002; that was when things got weird with my now ex-wife. Bought a 1997 VFR in Wichita, KS and rode it to Cassoday a few times, on the Baseball Grand Tour, and did a SaddleSore 1K in May of 2002 to Chicago and back. Good year for riding; almost 10,000 miles (not all shown on the map).

2 Swine Flu Cases Confirmed in Kansas - NBC Action News KSHB-TV 41
2 Swine Flu Cases Confirmed in Kansas - NBC Action News KSHB-TV 41: "The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has confirmed two cases of swine flu in the state involving two adults residing in the same household in Dickinson County.
Neither of the patients was hospitalized. One is ill and being treated while the other one is recovering, according to the KDHE.
One of the patients had recently traveled to Mexico, flying in and out of Wichita. Both persons work in Saline County and became ill with the same unique (H1N1) strain of swine flu that has been identified in Mexico, California and Texas"

Public safety news in brief | Youngster brings nonfunctioning gun aboard school bus - Kansas City Star:
No lockdown - no SWAT teams called - no automatic weapons pointed at the kids, no command posts set up. The kid screwed up, check. The other kids told an adult, check. The adult took the right measures. And most surprising, it made the news - granted a mini-blurb back on page A-22...
"An 8-year-old boy showed friends a gun on the school bus. They told the principal.
Not your typical show-and-tell, but it happened Friday morning.
The boy’s family apparently found the gun in his grandfather’s house after his grandfather died.
After the bus arrived at the Longan French Magnet School near 34th and Cherry streets, the principal took the gun, which was missing its firing pin, and called security. A police officer interviewed the boy and his mother after school.
Since the gun didn’t work and the boy had not threatened anyone, police returned the gun to the mother. School officials said they were handling the matter under code of conduct guidelines."

The More Things Change . . .
A few years ago (well, some 2,900 years ago), a new leader was risen up to the people. He was young and powerful and glorious, and he was tasked to find his way as a leader. The people, fearing that he would continue to tax them as heavily as had his father, promised their loyalty in return for a lighter burden.
Hmm. King Rehoboam didn't have a great ending. Wonder how our story will come out? Who will be our Rehoboam?
"And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions." (KJV, 1-Kings-12)
Hmm. King Rehoboam didn't have a great ending. Wonder how our story will come out? Who will be our Rehoboam?
(Side note - this bible study stuff is as addictive as constitutional law. I have no life.)

You needn't be driving to be guilty of DWI: "[MN} State law says that any person who drives, operates or is in 'physical control' of a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration of more than 0.08 percent is guilty of a crime. Testing of Fleck showed an alcohol concentration of 0.18 percent, the court said.
The court cited a 1992 ruling saying that 'physical control' includes situations where a drunk person is found in a parked vehicle that might be started and driven."

Investigative journalism under threat from new regulations

Investigative journalism under threat from new regulations :
"The concern is that if someone gets in touch with a journalist, who then writes a story based on that information, the new regulations mean that the police - or intelligence services or local council - can work back from the database of all the contacts made to the journalist and figure out who the whistleblower is. It blows a huge hole in the journalist's legal defence under section 10 of the Contempt of Court Act of 1981 that sources can stay secret unless 'the court is satisfied disclosure is necessary in the interests of justice or national security or for the prevention of disorder or crime'. Join the communications dots, and a suspect is fingered.
How do you counter that risk? 'Step down a couple of technological rungs,' says David Leigh, the Guardian's investigations editor. 'Just send a letter - you know, snail mail.' He adds: 'When I've dealt with secret sources they take very great care not to communicate on any electronic medium.'
The next step, says Campbell, is to do what drug dealers and terrorists do: use pay-as-you-go phones and unregistered sim cards, bought with cash. Such closed rings are almost unbreakable - once you've met to swap numbers.
But must journalists and sources really use the same tactics as terrorists and drug dealers?"

Learning The Wrong Lessons
Learning The Wrong Lessons from Sandra Cantu’s Death-- FreeRangeKids:
"The chances of being abducted and killed by a stranger stand at 1,500,000 to one, according to the Crimes Against Children Research Center. This is a number that does not go up or down a lot year to year. To keep your children inside or guarded at all times because of chances like that would make sense only if you also vowed never to take your children in a car, considering the odds of them dying in an accident are 40 times greater.
And yet, even though five child passengers are killed each day, you never see parents vowing, “I used to let my kids come with me in the car. But after this, there will be no more driving. This is a long-term change.”"

Change?
In Warrantless Wiretapping Case, Obama DOJ's New Arguments Are Worse Than Bush's | Electronic Frontier Foundation:
For what it's worth, this is from the left-wing group Electronic Freedom Frontier - not some NeoCon right wing team.
"the gulf between Candidate Obama and President Obama is striking. As a candidate, Obama ran promising a new era of government transparency and accountability, an end to the Bush DOJ's radical theories of executive power, and reform of the PATRIOT Act. But, this week, Obama's own Department Of Justice has argued that, under the PATRIOT Act, the government shall be entirely unaccountable for surveilling Americans in violation of its own laws.
This isn't change we can believe in. This is change for the worse."

The Atlantic Online | May 2009 | The Quiet Coup | Simon Johnson:

Who Is Arming the Mexican Drug Cartels? by Michael Gaddy
Who Is Arming the Mexican Drug Cartels? by Michael Gaddy:
"This week, Secretary of Homeland Defense, Janet Napolitano, announced a new plan to curb the alleged flow of weapons from the US into Mexico. This program, which will cost the overwhelmed US Taxpayer another 700 million dollars plus, includes machines that employ what is referred to as 'virtual strip search.' This plan will supposedly slow down the number of guns traveling south from the US to the drug cartels in Mexico. If this program has the same success rate as the government’s efforts at stopping the flow of contraband north into the US, the Mexican drug cartels will have nuclear weapons by the end of April!"

Airport Extreme error (-5) after firmware upgrade
I upgraded my Airport Extreme to 7.4.1 (74100.25) firmware and immediately after the upgrade Airport Utility reported "An error occurred while reading the configuration. Make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-5)"
Additionally the wireless would not assign a valid IP address to my MacBook Pro.
I resolved this by connecting to the Airport Extreme via ethernet. Then I launched Airport Utility and chose File - Configure Other. I entered the IP address (10.0.1.1) of the device and my password. This brought up the configuration options. I chose from the menu "Base Station", Upload Firmware. This presented a list of firmware choices and I chose 7.3.2. The downgrade completed and I was able to use the wireless again as well as normally configure the Airport Extreme via wireless or ethernet. No more Error -5.
I found this information in the Apple Discussions forum.

True Colors
British government environmental ministers are showing their true colors, aping the Earth First line that people are a parasite on the planet, and the population must be reduced. (link to google search; work firewall won't let me view their site)
How much? 30,000,000 people in Britain alone - about 50% of the population. Assuming you extrapolate that out, that's around 3,000,000,000 'excess population' that needs to be removed to match the planets carrying capacity.
Stalin would be proud.
Oh - sorry - we can't "treat the world’s population as a homogenous unit, as deep ecologists so often do." Only the industrially developed nations need to be de-populated, in order to match the carrying capacity of the planet.
Any volunteers for depopulation?
OK, this really isn't news, it's been bandied about by Malthusian and growth sides, as well as the NWO tinfoil hat crowd for years. The interesting bit is that it's an official government position statement, rather than tweedy academics or gun-toting art-bell-listening tweakers bringing it up.

National Pi Day
National Pi Day? Congress makes it official | Politics and Law - CNET News
: "Washington politicians took time from bailouts and earmark-laden spending packages on Wednesday for what might seem like an unusual act: officially designating a National Pi Day.
That's Pi as in ratio-of-a-circle's-circumference-to-diameter, better known as the mathematical constant beginning with 3.14159.
The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a resolution introduced two days earlier that designates March 14, 2009 (3/14, get it?) as National Pi Day. It urges schools to take the opportunity to teach their students about Pi and 'engage them about the study of mathematics.'"

Yaesu VX-8R and Motorcycles
At first glance, the new Yaesu VX-8R Ham radio looks like it's perfect for motorcycle use. Waterproof, receives DC to light (530khz to 999mhz) APRS built in, etc. But one problem - in order to use the APRS, you have to either plug the GPS puck into the microphone jack, or use an external speaker mic with a slot for the GPS puck. In order to use the HT with external mic and speakers (like hooked to an Autocom) you have to hook an adapter dongle to the microphone jack.
The adapter dongle doesn't have a provision for the GPS puck - so no dice running APRS and using it with your Autocom.
Now it does have a Bluetooth option coming out, so it may be possible to use Bluetooth for audio and transmit, while having the GPS puck attached to the radio. We'll see . . .

Finding stuff in Unixland with Grep or Find
Sometimes you need to find something somewhere in your filesystem. Forget where thought. You remember it was in a PHP file somewhere, though.
The classic way I was taught was with a find -exec {} command:
But, in reading the man page for grep, I see it has a -R option, for recursive. So, which is faster? Find or grep?
First, the classic find -exec command. I've suppressed the output from grep for clarity:
Now, for the recursive grep:
Way faster. Neat. Less typing too.
Next: To prove black is white. I'll just remember to watch out for the zebra crossings.

Heck of a Good Deal!

Got an offer in the mail today where I could earn up to $200 a year back on my purchases. Pretty good deal - and as an incentive, they gave me two checks for $5.00 each - so up to $210 the first year, and I'm $10 up right out the gate! Nice deal!
Check the fine print though - by cashing the checks, you agree to be enrolled in two different 'savings' programs, at an annual cost of $120 per year, per program.
So, the net savings by enrolling is this great deal?
$100 savings, program 1
$100 savings, program 2
-$240 membership fees
--------
-$40 cost out of my pocket, just so I can 'save' some money.
Oh, I forgot to mention the free week of Jazzercise lessons they'll throw in.
Seriously.
Reading the fine-fine print, turns out to get this $200 back, you have to save all your purchase receipts, and mail them into a special PO box one time per year. Very nice. How kind of them to only require a single mailing per year of receipts.
So, just for some Googlefodder: Buyers Advantage is a SCAM. Just for Me is a SCAM. Ripoff. Complaint. HSBC. M. Tremaglio.

Izza Dog!
Saturday night, Alec and I went to see Marley and Me - a movie about the worlds worst dog. Last week, we had decided that we didn't want to get a dog right now. Ok, well, I decided.
After seeing the movie - what'd we decide to do? Get a dog. Went to The Pet Connection in Mission KS to see who was there and they had a pair of 7 month old black lab mix puppies. One of them is home with us now.
His name is either 'Sam' or 'Doc'. He came from the shelter as Sam, and for a couple of hours we tried out Doc. Doc is too close to Dog, though...
Bizzare situation - they were raised in Osceola, MO at the shelter. Dropped there as 8 week pups. How they could fail to adopt a lab puppies I don't know, but my good fortune (?). So, Sam (or Doc) is effectively a blank slate. No bad experiences, no real training either. And he's never seen stairs. Will not go up or down the stairs in the house for love or treats. Sigh.
Should be an interesting time. He does sleep well in his kennel fortunately. And the cats are doing just as I hoped they would - Kiki is hiding all day and Random just looks at the dog like a disease. Sam looks at the cats no differently than furniture, so that's good so far. Not letting him roam alone in the house for a few months though.

From a Slashdot post of all places:
One of the best and most lasting ways of becoming happy is to surround oneself with people that makes you feel happy. If the people around you do not make you happy, it's not their fault. You're responsible for your own happiness. You choose them. Choose people that makes you feel happy.

Lenovo Ideapad S10 2 GB RAM and 6-cell battery upgrade
Lenovo Ideapad S10 2 GB RAM and 6-cell battery upgrade:
"For the Lenovo S10 you need a DDR2 PC5300 SODIMM (this will not fit into a standard SDRAM SODIMM socket). A SODIMM, or small outline dual in-line memory module, is a smaller alternative to a DIMM, being roughly half the size of regular DIMMs. SODIMMS are often used in systems which have space restrictions such as notebooks and netbooks.Click the link above to get linkies to ram, batteries. Or just search Amazon. Sweet.
Lenovo's IdeaPad S10 netbook is easy to upgrade. The S10 has 512MB soldered onto the motherboard and only one SODIMM slot. If your S10 comes with more than 512MB preinstalled, than there's already a SODIMM in the slot and you will have to remove it first. The motherboard also cannot recognize more than 2GB in total, including the built-in 512 MB. A 2 GB DIMM will give you 2 GB, not 2.5 GB, because the last 512 MB will be ignored"
Now to decide 'tween Dell Mini 9 and Lenovo S10.

Nuts about Nuts?
BBC NEWS | Health | Warning of nut allergy 'hysteria':
Professor Nicolas Christakis, a professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School, notes that the hysteria about nut contamination looks more like mass psychogenic illness. (See: Salem Witch Trials, etc.)
"Measures to protect children with nut allergies are becoming increasingly absurd and hysterical, say experts.
A peanut on the floor of a US school bus recently led to evacuation and decontamination for fear it might have affected the 10-year-old passengers."
Facts: there are 2,000 hospitalizations a year (out of 30,000,000 total) for all allergic reactions. Just 150 people a year die from food allergies.

Accuracy vs Precision
Fiddling with new toys - got a $5 oven thermometer and a $40 meat thermometer. Set the oven to 350 - nice digital display, so it *should* be accurate and precise.
Testing that theory. The $5 oven thermometer reads precisely 10 degrees low - the oven claims it's at 350 degrees; the thermometer reads 340. The $40 meat thermometer shows the initial warmup overshot to 375 degrees, then cooled to 365, even after opening the oven several times to check the $5 thermometer.
After about a 10 minute 'rest' -- long enough to type up this blog post - the $40 meat thermometer has dropped to 351 degrees. I think the oven agrees - I just heard the relays kick on to re-energize the heating elements. The $5 thermometer still shows low - 342 or thereabout.
After a 20 minute 'rest' and a full heat cycle the oven thermometer now shows 160, and the meat thermometer shows 165 degrees.
So, which is right? I don't know. They are all precise - same measurements every time. But until I can find a definitive answer, I'm out of luck for accuracy.
The good news is that the oven display is right on the money, at least good enough for home use.

CNN misses, Google Hits.
Earlier today (yesterday, now) nuclear armed India invaded nuclear armed Pakistan -- quick action by Pakistani air force jets headed off the attempted invasion. Ok, the news calls it 'airspace violations'. At least some of the news. CNN - not so much. A search at 10:00 PM CST, Dec 13 shows zero hits for Pakistan Airspace on CNN:
The same search on Google News turns up 539 hits.
What's CNN up to? Or are they just bound and determined to go tango-uniform? (toes (tits) up - Dead)

Tiny PCs, Full-Size Problems
Rob Pegoraro - Tiny PCs, Full-Size Problems: "What to get instead? If you're buying a netbook as your sole computer, knowing that you'll only use it on the Web, Acer offers the best bet for now. If, however, you're buying it as a third or fourth computer and are willing to tweak it to fit your own needs, look at the MSI.
But it might be better to wait. If these manufacturers have the good sense to steal each other's best ideas, we should see significantly better choices before long."

Guess Mom's gettin a new mac
Netflix now offers their 'Watch Instantly' feature for the Macintosh, but it requires:
Netflix: Watch Instantly: "Mac
An Intel-based Mac with OS 10.4.8 or later
Safari 3 or higher; or Firefox 2 or higher
1 GB RAM"
Mom's still running a G5 iMac - the original 17" model. She's also a big fan of Netflix. Hmm. New mac? Or Rokku netflix box for streaming over the TV? (and wifi network and receiver and speakers for switching between cable, DVD and Netflix and . . .)

Constitution Free Zone
American Civil Liberties Union : Surveillance Society Clock:

"Using data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, the ACLU has determined that nearly 2/3 of the entire US population (197.4 million people) live within 100 miles of the US land and coastal borders.
The government is assuming extraordinary powers to stop and search individuals within this zone. This is not just about the border: This ' Constitution-Free Zone' includes most of the nation's largest metropolitan areas"
What in the hell am I talking about?
Normally under the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the American people are not subject to random and arbitrary stops and searches. The border has always been an exception. There, the longstanding view is that the normal rules do not apply. For example the authorities do not need a warrant or probable cause to conduct a “routine search.” But what is “the border”? According to the government, it is a 100-mile wide strip that wraps around the “external boundary” of the United States.
Border Patrol has been setting up checkpoints inland — on highways in states such as California, Texas and Arizona, and at ferry terminals in Washington State. Typically, the agents ask drivers and passengers about their citizenship. However, these stops by Border Patrol agents are not remaining confined to that border security purpose. On the roads of California and elsewhere in the nation – places far removed from the actual border – agents are stopping, interrogating, and searching Americans on an everyday basis with absolutely no suspicion of wrongdoing. Dozens of drug sniffing dogs are employed along southern borders in Arizona, resulting in thousands of arrests per year. Not for pounds and kilos of dope - for dust in a baggie; used pipes in the trunk; seeds and stems in the carpet.
They're setting up terrorist and immigration checkpoints in those hotbeds of radical violence, like Forks, Oregon. (Courtesy the Seattle Times)
This July, the government updated the Border Patrol policy to date regarding information searches: now documents and electronic devices can be detained for an unspecified period. They may now be copied without any suspicion of wrongdoing, the lowest legal standard. Any papers. Any electronic device. Any information. An example? An FBI agent asked Texas native Yasir Qadhi to come by. Qadhi said the agent cited the March 2006 stop, where his cell phone was confiscated, and said, "We went through your personal diary in your phone, and we discovered these numbers on there, and we want to know your relationship with these specific individuals." Discussion on Slashdot.org
(realistically, checking the Bill of Rights, the only one the current and past administrations have missed violating or simply eliminating by fiat is the 3rd amendment. 9 and 10 have been long gone since the 1930s.)
Indeed, I rather doubt that the framers of the Fourth Amendment would have considered 'reasonable' a program of indiscriminate stops of individuals not suspected of wrongdoing.Justice Clarence Thomas, 28-Nov-2000 (City of Indianapolis v. Edmond, 531 U.S. 32 (2000))

Jeremy Clarkson Vespa GTV Navy 125 review | Driving - Times Online: "What I’m trying to say here is that, yes, bikes and cars are both forms of transport, but they have nothing in common. IRS Withholding Calculator
IRS Withholding Calculator: "The purpose of this application is to help employees to ensure that they do not have too much or too little income tax withheld from their pay. It is not a replacement for Form W-4, but most people will find it more accurate and easier to use than the worksheets that accompany Form W-4. You may use the results of this program to help you complete a new Form W-4, which you will submit to your employer."

Airave and bandwidth
I've just gotten a Sprint Airave -- a box that acts as a micro cell tower and sends the voice signal across the Internet to the public telephone network -- and I thought I'd see how it works when you are limited in bandwidth.
So, I'm downloading a whole stack of files, using over 600kb/sec of bandwidth (the cable modem only handles about 680kb/sec) and got on a conference call.
Everything seems to be working fine! Fancy...

Cooking
Here I was feeling pretty good about getting a homecooked meal for Alec tonight - nothing fancy, just a basic omlette, toast, orange wedges, etc. Then I talked to Nathan. And he's fixing home made macaroni and cheese. With home made croutons. From his own made from scratch home-made bread. (using his home-brew yeast cultures I have to assume!)
Sigh.
And he's a single dad with a harder full-time job than I have!
I think I'll order pizza.

Pork Salad - or a good hard shaft?
From the Jamie Dupree show on wsbradio.com: "Subparagraph (A) shall not apply to any shaft consisting of all natural wood with no laminations or artificial means of enhancing the spine of such shaft,"
